A five minute walk downstream from Rothbury, along the tree lined pathway called “Lovers’ Walk”, The River Coquet takes on a whole new personality at The Thrum. Here the slow, meandering river is f
orced through a narrow g orge, causing the placid water to pick
up speed and become an urgent tumbling t orrent. It’s a place of noisy cascades, deep, dark
shadows and bright reflected sunlight. The relentless water has scoured and sculpted the submerged rock into
scalloped frills. F or generations people have carved
their names into the exposed rocks, creating a palimpsest of N orthumbrian surnames.
